Meta tag generator

Your meta tags

Paste this inside the <head> of your page. On WordPress, plugins like Rank Math or Yoast already add these tags, so just copy the title and description into the plugin instead.

How to use the meta tag generator

  1. Write a page title (around 50 to 60 characters) and a meta description (around 120 to 155 characters).
  2. Add the full page URL. It becomes the canonical link and the og:url.
  3. Add a share image URL if you have one. It is used for WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X previews.
  4. Tick noindex only for pages you want kept out of Google, like thank-you pages or internal search results.
  5. Copy the code and paste it inside the <head> of your page.

What each tag does

  • <title>: the clickable headline in Google and the text on the browser tab.
  • meta description: the summary Google may show under your title.
  • robots: tells search engines whether to index the page and follow its links.
  • canonical: tells Google which URL is the main version when the same content is reachable at more than one address.
  • og: tags: build the preview card when your link is shared in chat and social apps.
  • twitter: tags: do the same for X. The large-image card is used when you add an image.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the same title and description on every page.
  • Leaving noindex on after a site goes live. This one tag can keep a whole site out of Google.
  • Pointing the canonical to a different page by mistake, for example the homepage.
  • Using a share image URL that needs a login or is blocked, so apps can’t load it.

Frequently asked questions

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are small pieces of HTML in the <head> of a page. Visitors don’t see them on the page, but search engines and social apps read them to understand the page and to build the preview shown in search results and shared links.

Which meta tags matter for SEO?

The title tag matters most, followed by a clear meta description, a canonical link and the robots tag when you need to keep a page out of search. Google ignores the old keywords meta tag, so this tool does not add it.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph (og:) tags control the title, description and image shown when your link is shared on WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and many other apps. Without them, apps guess, and the preview often looks broken.

What size should my share image be?

1200 × 630 pixels is the widely used size for link previews. Keep important text away from the edges, because some apps crop the image to a square.

I use WordPress. Do I need this code?

Usually not. SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast output these tags for you. Use this tool to draft the title and description, then paste them into your plugin’s fields.
