What changed for doctors in October 2026

On 6 October 2026 the NMC’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board issued Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication for registered medical practitioners and hospitals (summary on Medical Dialogues). They apply immediately, and penalties for doctors range from a warning to suspension of registration for repeated or serious violations.

In short: factual information that helps patients is fine, and self-promotion aimed at winning patients is not. Patient testimonials, before-and-after photos, claims like “best” or “No.1” without a verifiable method, guaranteed cures, discounts and coupons, fake or paid reviews, paid rankings and manipulated search visibility are all out. Payments to agencies or platforms that are tied to bringing in individual patients are also barred, and using an agency does not move the responsibility away from the doctor.

That rules out much of what “doctor marketing” used to mean. What’s left is the part that actually builds trust: being easy to find, being accurate, and helping people understand their health.

Common problems we fix

Old content that now breaks the rules

Testimonial videos, before-and-after galleries and “best doctor in town” banners still sitting on websites and social profiles.

Wrong details on Google

Old clinic address, wrong timings or a missing phone number on Google Maps, so patients turn up at the wrong place or call the wrong number.

A website patients can’t use

Slow pages, no clear timings or fees, and no simple way to book or call from a phone.

No registration details shown

Qualifications and registration number hidden or missing, which patients increasingly look for.

Per-lead marketing deals

Arrangements where an agency or platform is paid per patient or per lead, which the new guidelines bar.

Health content nobody checked

Copied or AI-written articles with risky claims and no doctor review.

Your Google Business Profile as a doctor

Google treats doctors as individual practitioners. Under Google’s guidelines for Business Profiles, a doctor who sees patients directly at a verified location during stated hours can have their own profile, separate from the clinic or hospital, but should not create several profiles for different specialities. We set up and maintain these profiles with factual details only: name, qualifications, category, address, hours and phone.

On your website, the same facts can go into structured data. Our free schema markup generator builds LocalBusiness JSON-LD you can paste into your site.

Who this is for

  • Doctors in private practice who want patients to find accurate details about their clinic.
  • Specialists such as dermatologists, gynaecologists, orthopaedic surgeons and paediatricians who want useful condition and procedure pages.
  • Multi-doctor clinics and polyclinics that need one clear site with a directory of doctors and departments.
  • Doctors with older marketing who need their website and social profiles brought in line with the new guidelines.

How we work

  1. Review (week 1). We check your website, Google profile and social profiles, and list anything that may conflict with the guidelines.
  2. Plan (week 2). A written plan: what to fix, which pages to build and which health topics to cover first.
  3. Build (months 1–2). Website fixes or a new site, Google profile clean-up, tracking and the first articles for your review.
  4. Maintain (every month). New doctor-reviewed content, profile updates and a plain-language report.

What to expect

Searches for your own name and clinic usually improve first, often within a few weeks of fixing your website and Google profile. Searches like “dermatologist in Kothrud” take longer, usually several months, and depend on how many doctors in your area are competing. We don’t promise rankings or patient numbers, and under the guidelines nobody should.

Digital marketing for doctors: FAQs

Can doctors in India do digital marketing at all?

Doctors can share factual information such as qualifications, registration, services, timings and fees, make formal announcements, and provide health education that isn’t promotional. Self-promotion aimed at winning patients, testimonials, superlative claims, inducements and paid rankings are not allowed under the NMC guidelines of 6 October 2026. Your State Medical Council has the final word.

Can I show patient reviews on my website?

Patient testimonials and endorsements are prohibited under the guidelines, and patient consent does not make them acceptable. We remove testimonial sections from websites. Reviews that patients leave on Google on their own are a separate matter, and you should never buy, fake or reward reviews.

Is SEO allowed under the NMC guidelines?

The guidelines bar manipulating search rankings or visibility to create a misleading impression, and paid rankings. Making an accurate, fast, well-structured website with genuine health information is a different thing. If you are unsure about a specific activity, check with your State Medical Council.

Can I use AI to write health content?

The guidelines bar AI-generated promotional campaigns for commercial interest and require that compliant AI content is marked as AI-generated. We write content with people, have you review it, and label anything AI-assisted as the guidelines require.

Do you charge per patient or per lead?

No. Payment structures tied to bringing in individual patients are barred under the guidelines. We charge a flat monthly fee for the work.

Can my photo be on my clinic website?

The guidelines restrict using a doctor’s photograph where it amounts to self-advertisement or promotional publicity. A factual doctor directory with names, qualifications, registration and availability is treated as patient information. We keep photos out of promotional contexts and suggest you confirm specifics with your State Medical Council.

How much does it cost?

It depends on whether your website needs fixing or rebuilding and how much content you want each month. The free review ends with a fixed monthly quote.
