SEO Cost in India (2026): What ₹5K, ₹30K and ₹1 Lakh a Month Actually Buy You

You asked three SEO people for a quote. One said ₹5,000 a month. One said ₹35,000. One said “let’s get on a call first.”
Same website. Same city. Same goal.
So who’s ripping you off? Maybe nobody. Maybe all three.
Quick answer: how much does SEO cost in India?
SEO in India typically costs ₹5,000 to ₹1,50,000 a month, depending on who does the work, how competitive your market is and how much content and technical work your site needs. Large enterprise programs can go past ₹5 lakh a month.
- Freelancers: about ₹5,000–₹30,000/month
- Small agencies: about ₹15,000–₹60,000/month
- Mid-size agencies: about ₹50,000–₹1,50,000/month
- Enterprise / specialist: ₹1,00,000–₹5,00,000+/month
- Hourly consulting: about ₹800–₹3,000/hour
In an Ahrefs survey of SEO providers, 76% of India-based SEOs charged $1,000 (about ₹95,000) or less per month. Most quotes add 18% GST on top.
Here’s the thing: SEO cost in India isn’t one number. It’s a price for hours of skilled work, and every quote you get is quietly buying a different amount of it. Once you see SEO that way, the quotes stop looking random.
In this guide I’ll walk you through:
- What SEO actually costs in India right now, using real market data (not a rate card we made up)
- What ₹5K, ₹30K and ₹1 lakh a month buys you in hours, and what you can realistically expect from each
- The 5 pricing models, and the one we’d avoid
- Hidden costs, GST, and the red flags that should end a sales call
- A free calculator to sanity-check any quote in 30 seconds
Now let’s break down where those numbers come from, and what they actually buy you.
How much does SEO cost in India? What the 2026 data says
Independent data points the same way: Indian SEO is among the cheapest in the world, and most providers charge under about ₹95,000 a month. Indian agencies listed on Clutch mostly show rates under $25 (about ₹2,400) an hour, and marketplace “packages” start as low as ₹3,000 a month.
Most “SEO pricing” articles you’ll find are written by agencies that quote their own packages and call it the market. (Yes, we’re an agency too. So we did the opposite: we looked at what independent sources and marketplaces show.)
Here’s what we found.
1. The Ahrefs SEO pricing survey
Ahrefs surveyed hundreds of SEO service providers worldwide about how they charge. India stood out as the clear low-price outlier. According to their published results:
- Monthly retainers: 76% of India-based SEOs charged $1,000 or less a month (roughly ₹95,000 at today’s rate)
- Hourly: 85.7% charged $30 an hour or less (roughly ₹2,850/hour)
- Per project: 93.75% charged $1,500 or less (roughly ₹1.4 lakh)
For context, the most common retainer worldwide in the same survey was $501–$1,000 a month, and the average was much higher.
2. Agency directories (Clutch and Semrush)
On Clutch’s list of Indian SEO firms, the agencies we checked list their hourly rate in the under $25/hour band (about ₹2,375), and most show a minimum project size of $1,000+ (about ₹95,000 across the engagement).
The Semrush Agency Partners directory tells a similar story. Indian SEO agencies list budgets from “any” or “$0–$1,000” all the way up to “starting from $10,000.” Among those that state a minimum, $1,000 was the most common.
3. Marketplaces (the bottom of the market)
Search IndiaMART and you’ll find “SEO packages” listed for as little as ₹3,000 a month. We’ll come back to what that kind of money can (and can’t) buy.
4. What the top-ranking Indian price guides say
We also read the pricing guides currently ranking on Google for “SEO cost in India.” Here’s the funny part: they don’t agree with each other, and a couple don’t even agree with themselves. Pulled together, the ranges look like this:
| Who does the work | Typical monthly range quoted | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | ₹5,000 – ₹30,000 | Small local businesses, simple sites, tight budgets |
| Small agency | ₹15,000 – ₹60,000 | Local and regional businesses, small e-commerce stores |
| Mid-size agency | ₹50,000 – ₹1,50,000 | Competitive niches, national brands, larger stores |
| Enterprise / specialist | ₹1,00,000 – ₹5,00,000+ | Big sites, multiple markets, heavy content and digital PR |
These are ranges quoted in published Indian guides and directories as of October 2026, not a rate card. Dollar figures converted at roughly ₹95 per $1.
So yes, “SEO cost in India” honestly ranges from ₹3,000 to well over ₹5 lakh a month.
That’s not very helpful on its own, is it? Let’s make it useful.
The trick that makes every SEO quote make sense: convert it into hours
SEO isn’t a product. Nobody ships you a box of “rankings.”
What you’re actually paying for is someone’s time: researching keywords, fixing your site, writing pages, building links, and checking what worked.
So the most useful question you can ask about any quote is:
“How many hours of skilled work does this actually buy me each month?”
Indian pricing guides put SEO consulting at roughly ₹800 to ₹3,000 an hour, and the Ahrefs data above shows most Indian SEOs at or under ~₹2,850/hour. Here’s what common monthly budgets buy at three different rates:

| Monthly budget | @ ₹1,000/hr | @ ₹2,000/hr | @ ₹3,000/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 5 hrs | 2.5 hrs | ~1.7 hrs |
| ₹15,000 | 15 hrs | 7.5 hrs | 5 hrs |
| ₹30,000 | 30 hrs | 15 hrs | 10 hrs |
| ₹60,000 | 60 hrs | 30 hrs | 20 hrs |
| ₹1,00,000 | 100 hrs | 50 hrs | ~33 hrs |
Now think about what real SEO work takes.
A properly researched 1,500-word article is easily a 4–6 hour job once you count research, writing, editing, images and publishing. A decent technical audit of a small site can eat a full day. Building even one link worth having means finding the right site, pitching it, and following up.
See the problem with a ₹5,000 package?
At that price, either the work is tiny, or it’s being done in ways you don’t want (spun content, junk directory links, automated “reports”). It’s not that the person is evil. The maths simply doesn’t leave room for much else.
What each budget can realistically get you
This is a rough guide based on the hours above (at around ₹2,000/hour), not a promise. Your market, site and goals change everything.
- Under ₹10,000/month: maintenance mode. A few fixes, your Google Business Profile kept tidy, a monthly check-in. Fine for a tiny local business in a quiet market. Don’t expect new content or real link building.
- ₹10,000 – ₹30,000/month: a real starter program for a local or small business. Local SEO basics, technical clean-up, and roughly 1–3 solid pages or articles a month.
- ₹30,000 – ₹75,000/month: a proper growth program. Steady content, ongoing technical work, conversion improvements, and some outreach for links and mentions.
- ₹75,000+/month: competitive national markets or bigger e-commerce sites. A content engine, deeper technical SEO, digital PR, and more detailed reporting.

The 5 SEO pricing models in India (and which one to avoid)
SEO in India is priced in five ways: a monthly retainer, a one-time project fee, hourly consulting, per-keyword packages and pay-for-performance deals. Monthly retainers are the most common. Guaranteed-ranking deals are the ones to avoid.

1. Monthly retainer (the most common)
You pay a fixed fee every month for ongoing work. Ahrefs found it’s the most popular model worldwide too: 78.2% of SEOs in their survey offer it.
Good for: almost everyone, because SEO compounds over months.
Watch out for: vague retainers where you can’t tell what got done. Always ask for a monthly list of deliverables.
2. Project-based
One fixed fee for a defined job: an SEO audit, a site migration, setting up local SEO for a new branch, or optimising a new website before launch.
Good for: businesses with an in-house person who can carry the work forward.
Watch out for: a 60-page audit PDF that nobody ever implements. An audit is only worth it if the fixes actually happen.
3. Hourly consulting
You buy expert time by the hour, usually for strategy, training your team, or reviewing work.
Good for: teams that can execute but need direction.
Watch out for: open-ended hours with no agreed outcome.
4. Per-keyword packages (be careful)
You’ve probably seen these: “10 keywords for ₹8,000/month.” They’re very common in India.
The catch? Whoever picks the keywords controls whether the package “works.” It’s easy to “rank” for long phrases nobody searches. Your report looks great. Your phone doesn’t ring.
If you do buy per-keyword, insist on choosing keywords that have real search volume and buying intent, and ask to see traffic and leads, not just positions.
5. Pay-for-performance / guaranteed rankings (avoid)
“Pay only when you’re on page one!” sounds risk-free. It isn’t.
Google says it plainly in its own guide on whether you need an SEO: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Guarantee deals tend to push people toward shortcuts that can hurt your site later, or toward vanity keywords that were easy to win anyway.
8 things that push your SEO quote up (or down)
If two agencies quote you wildly different prices, one of these is usually why.
- How competitive your market is. “Dentist in Bhopal” and “health insurance India” are not the same fight. The tougher the keywords, the more content and links you need.
- Where you want to rank. One city, all of India, or other countries? Each step up multiplies the work.
- Your site’s size and health. A 10-page site is quick to fix. A 5,000-product store with duplicate pages, slow loading and broken filters is a project in itself.
- Content. This is usually the biggest variable. Does the quote include writing, or do you have to supply the content? Ask. It changes everything.
- Links and mentions. Real outreach and digital PR take time. Cheap “100 backlinks” packages are cheap for a reason.
- Languages. Hindi or regional-language pages can open up lower-competition searches, but they’re extra work.
- Who actually does the work. A senior strategist’s hour costs more than a junior’s. Ask who will be on your account.
- Reporting and communication. Weekly calls and custom dashboards take hours too. You’re paying for them.
How much does local, e-commerce and B2B SEO cost in India?
The type of SEO you need changes the price more than anything else. Here’s what published Indian price guides quote for the most common kinds of work:
| Type of SEO | Typical quoted cost in India | What drives the price |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO (one location) | ₹10,000 – ₹25,000/month | City competition, number of branches, reviews and listings work |
| E-commerce SEO | From about ₹40,000/month | Catalogue size, category pages, technical clean-up |
| Technical SEO audit | From about ₹15,000 (one-time) | Site size, platform, how many issues need fixing |
| Enterprise SEO | ₹1,50,000+/month | Thousands of pages, several markets, digital PR |
| Hourly consulting | ₹800 – ₹3,000/hour | Seniority and specialisation |
Ranges as quoted in published Indian price guides, October 2026 (see sources). Real quotes depend on scope.
Here’s how that plays out for three common kinds of business. These are starting points to help you budget, not quotes.
Local business (clinic, salon, coaching centre, CA firm)
Local SEO in India usually costs about ₹10,000–₹25,000 a month for one location. Several branches or a very competitive city cost more.
Your money is in Google Maps and “near me” searches. The core work: your Google Business Profile, reviews, location pages, local citations, and a fast mobile site.
Who usually does it: a freelancer or small agency is often enough for one location. See what’s included in our local SEO service.
E-commerce store (Shopify, WooCommerce, D2C)
E-commerce SEO in India usually starts around ₹40,000 a month, and large catalogues cost more because there’s simply more site to fix.
Here the heavy lifting is category pages, product page templates, site structure, page speed, and content that answers buying questions.
Who usually does it: a small to mid-size agency, since stores need technical, content and development skills together. See how we approach e-commerce SEO.
B2B / service company (SaaS, manufacturing, consultancy)
B2B SEO is usually content-led, so it often lands in the mid-size agency range (about ₹50,000–₹1,50,000 a month) once writing is included.
Fewer searches, but each lead can be worth a lot. This is usually content-led: in-depth service pages, comparison pages, and articles your buyers read before they talk to sales.
It pairs well with search-led content that answers your buyers’ questions.
Hidden costs nobody mentions on the sales call
The retainer is rarely the whole bill. Budget for these too:
- GST at 18%. SEO and digital marketing services generally attract 18% GST. If you’re GST-registered and use the service for business, you can usually claim it back as input tax credit. (Freelancers under the ₹20 lakh turnover threshold may not charge GST at all.) Check with your CA, since we’re not tax advisors.
- Content. If writing isn’t included, you’ll pay a writer separately or spend your own time.
- Website fixes. SEO people often find problems that need a developer, like slow pages or broken templates. Who pays for that? Many quotes don’t say. (It’s why we bundle website speed and CRO work with SEO when a site needs it.)
- Tools. Serious SEO tools are subscriptions, often priced in dollars. Ahrefs’ entry plan, for example, is listed at $29/month. Good agencies absorb this. Some pass it on.
- Images, design and video for new pages.
- Your own time. Approvals, feedback, giving access, answering questions. It adds up.
Red flags: when to walk away from an SEO quote

Run if you see any of these:
- “Guaranteed #1 ranking.” As Google itself says, no one can guarantee that.
- The cold email or WhatsApp that found you. Google’s guide specifically warns to be wary of SEO firms that email you out of the blue.
- Secrecy. If they won’t explain what they’ll do or why, that’s a problem. Google’s guide flags this too.
- “500 backlinks a month” or “submit to 1,000 search engines.” That’s not a strategy. That’s a risk to your site.
- They own your accounts. Your Google Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile should be in your name, with them as users.
- Long lock-ins with no exit. A 6-month minimum is reasonable for SEO. A 24-month contract with no exit clause isn’t.
- Reports full of rankings, but no traffic, leads or sales.
Questions to ask before you sign
Google’s own list of questions is a great place to start. Here’s our version, adapted for Indian businesses:
- Can you show me examples of past work? Can I speak to a client?
- What exactly will you deliver each month? (Get it in writing.)
- Who will actually work on my account, and how many hours does my fee cover?
- Is content writing included? How many pieces, and how long?
- Do you follow Google’s Search Essentials? How do you get links?
- What results do you expect, by when, and how will we measure them?
- Who owns the content and accounts if we stop working together?
- What’s the notice period to exit?
How to compare 3 SEO quotes side by side
Here’s a simple exercise. Put every quote into this table before you decide. Blank cells are your follow-up questions.
| Check | Quote A | Quote B | Quote C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee (incl. GST) | |||
| Hours of work per month | |||
| Content included (pieces/month) | |||
| Technical fixes included? | |||
| Link building method explained? | |||
| Reports show traffic and leads? | |||
| You own all accounts? | |||
| Minimum term and exit clause |
Nine times out of ten, the “expensive” quote turns out to include content and fixes the “cheap” one quietly leaves out.
How to set your SEO budget (a simple 4-step method)
Instead of starting with “what’s the market rate?”, start with your own numbers.
- Work out what one customer is worth to you. Not one sale. Think about the total value of a typical customer over a year or two.
- Estimate how many extra customers would make SEO worth it. If one new customer is worth ₹50,000 to you, a ₹25,000/month program needs very few wins to pay for itself.
- Commit for long enough. SEO is slow. Search Engine Land’s guide says SEO “typically takes three to six months” to show measurable results, and new websites are usually slower. Budget for at least 6 months.
- Pick the model that matches your team. No one in-house? Retainer. Someone in-house? Project or consulting.
Need leads while SEO builds up? Run Google and Meta ads alongside it, then shift budget as organic traffic grows.
If the maths says you can only afford ₹5,000 a month, that’s okay. But then don’t buy “full SEO” at ₹5,000. Buy something small and specific, like a one-time local SEO setup, and do the rest yourself.
Before you pay anyone, see what your site needs. Our free website SEO crawler checks up to 500 pages for broken links, redirects and missing titles, and the on-page SEO checker audits a single page. A short list of real problems makes every quote easier to judge.
Freelancer vs agency: which should you pick?
| Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Skills | One person’s strengths | Strategy, content, dev and design under one roof |
| If they get busy or leave | Work stops | Someone else picks it up |
| Best for | Small sites, one clear task | Growth programs needing several skills at once |
Neither is “better.” A great freelancer beats a lazy agency every time. Just make sure whoever you hire covers the skills your site actually needs. If you want to compare, here’s exactly what’s included in our SEO services.
SEO cost in India: frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost per month in India?
Most SEO in India is sold as a monthly retainer. Published price guides put freelancers at roughly ₹5,000–₹30,000 a month, small agencies around ₹15,000–₹60,000, and larger agencies from ₹50,000 to ₹5,00,000+. In an Ahrefs survey, 76% of India-based SEOs charged $1,000 (about ₹95,000) or less per month.
How much does local SEO cost in India?
Published Indian price guides put local SEO at about ₹10,000–₹25,000 a month for a single location. Several branches, a very competitive city or a profile that needs heavy clean-up will cost more.
How much does e-commerce SEO cost in India?
E-commerce SEO in India usually starts around ₹40,000 a month in published guides. Stores with large catalogues, many categories or serious technical problems cost more.
How much does an SEO audit cost in India?
A one-time technical SEO audit is quoted from about ₹15,000 in published Indian guides, rising with site size and complexity. An audit only pays off if someone actually implements the fixes.
Is ₹5,000 a month SEO worth it?
At typical Indian rates, ₹5,000 buys roughly 2 to 5 hours of work a month. That can cover basic upkeep for a tiny local business, but not new content, real link building or a competitive market. Buy a small, specific task at that budget instead of “full SEO.”
Why do SEO quotes in India vary so much?
Because each quote buys a different number of hours and a different scope. Competition, your site’s size, whether content is included, link building, and who does the work all change the price. Convert each quote into hours and deliverables to compare them fairly.
Is GST charged on SEO services in India?
Generally yes, at 18%. If you’re GST-registered and use the service for your business, you can usually claim it as input tax credit. Freelancers below the GST registration threshold may not charge it. Confirm with your CA.
Should I pay for SEO per keyword?
Be careful. Per-keyword packages let the provider choose easy keywords that rank but bring no customers. If you go this route, choose keywords with real search volume and buying intent, and judge results by traffic and leads.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Usually months, not weeks. Search Engine Land’s guide puts it at about three to six months for measurable results, longer for brand-new sites and competitive industries. Plan for at least six months.
Is one-time SEO enough?
A one-time project can fix your foundations, like technical issues, site structure and local SEO setup. But rankings need ongoing content and upkeep, because your competitors keep working. One-time SEO works best when someone keeps it going afterwards.

The bottom line
SEO cost in India ranges from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs a month, and both ends can be the right choice for the right business.
Don’t ask “what’s the cheapest?” or “what’s the market rate?”
Ask: “How many hours of skilled work does this buy, what exactly gets done, and how will we know it’s working?”
Ask that, and you’ll spot a good deal (and a bad one) in minutes.
