How to use the slug generator
  1. Paste a title, or several titles with one on each line.
  2. Set a maximum length. Around 3 to 5 words is usually enough.
  3. Keep “Remove filler words” on for shorter slugs.
  4. Copy the slugs into your CMS permalink field.
What makes a good slug
  • Short and descriptive. /local-seo-pune/ says more than /services-page-2/.
  • Lowercase only. Some servers treat uppercase and lowercase URLs as different pages.
  • Words joined with hyphens. No spaces, symbols or emojis.
  • Includes the main topic. Use the words people search for, but don’t repeat them.
  • Stable over time. Leave out dates and numbers that will need updating.

What is a URL slug?
The slug is the part of a URL that names a specific page. In example.com/services/local-seo/, the slug is local-seo. A good slug is short, readable and describes the page.
Should I remove words like ‘the’ and ‘for’ from slugs?
Usually yes. Filler words make URLs longer without adding meaning. Keep them only when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug hard to read.
Should I include the year in a slug?
Avoid it for content you plan to update. A slug like /seo-cost-in-india/ can stay the same every year, while /seo-cost-in-india-2026/ looks outdated next year and changing it means setting up a redirect.
Can I change the slug of a live page?
You can, but set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, and update your internal links. Otherwise visitors and Google hit a 404 page and the page can lose its rankings for a while.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google’s URL guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words, because they are read as spaces between words.
